TYING INSTRUCTION

  1. Insert a hook in the vise and build good tread base.

  2. Wrap 21 wraps of lead wire onto the hook's shank, as much behind as in front of the hook's mid point, and secure with many wraps of tying thread over the length ot the lead wire wrappings. Flatten the lead with smooth nosed pliers just enough to achiev a flattened body. Too much flattening will cause the lead wire o crumble.

  4. Abdomen - Attach the oval gold tinsel and the brown sparkle yarn at the tail tie in point. Wind a closely wrapped abdomen slightly more than 1/2 hook's shank length and secure the yarn with tying thread. Trim the excess yarn.

  5. Ribs - Spiral 5 or 6 turns of oval gold tinsel through the abdomen and secure with tying thread at the front of the abdomen. Trim the excess tinsel.

  6. Thorax - Tie in the coated turkey wing feather strip by the butt (large) ends shiney side up with the feather tips extending to the rear of the fly. Attach the pheasant shoulder feather concave side down, by the butt of the stem, at the front of the abdomen. Attach the thorax material and wrap to the rear of normal head space secure with tying thread and trim the excess yarn.

  7. Legs - Palmer the pheasant shoulder feather to the front of the thorax in three turns, secure with tying thread and trim the excess feather.

  8. Wing Case - Pull the coated turkey wing feather strip over the thorax to the rear of the head space and secure with tying thread. Trim the excess close

    ADDITIONAL NOTES

Tam's Stone is simply another in a long line of similar stone flies with the legs being the wing shoulder feather from a ringneck pheasant. No more or no less effective than many other stone fly nymph patterns Tam's Stone sure looks good in your fly box and will elicit many comments! Black sparkle yarn is a very good substitute for brown and is prefered by many that fish this fly. The prefered yarn for Tam's Stone is Red Heart Dazzleair and is getting hard to come by. If anyone finds a good supply please give me a buzz.
