MATERIALS LIST

  1. Hook - Daiichi 1710, Mustad 9671, Orvis 1524, Partridge D4A, Tiemco 5262. Size 8 to 2.

  2. Thread - 6/0 Uni-Thread same color as the suede leather.

  3. Tail Legs Antennae - Goose biots.

  4. Underbody - Appropriately colored dubbing.

  5. Thorax - Rabbit hair clipped from the hide in correct color.

  6. Abdomen and Wingpads - Very thin suede leather.

  7. Weight - Two layers of lead wire or an environmentally friendly substitute.

TYING INSTRUCTION

  1. Insert a hook in the vise, secure the tying thread onto the hook's shank and build a good tying thread base from hook's eye to hook's bend.

  2. Tail - Dub small ball of dubbing at the hook's bend to seperate the biots. Position the tail biots equal in length on either side of dubbing ball/hook's shank, and secure with several wraps of tying thread. Add a drop of head cement to the tail tie in thread wraps.

  3. Weight - Wrap 1/2 of the hook's shank with two layers of lead wire and secure with several layers of tying thread the full length of the lead wire.

  4. Under Body - Use the single strand method to dub a tapered underbody to facilitate the smooth application of the suede leather strip.

  5. Abdomen - Cut a strip of suede about 4" (102mm) long and 3/16" (5mm) wide and trim the leather strip to a point at one end. Secure the pointed end of the suede leather strip at the tail tie in point with tying thread. Wrap the suede leather strip forward, overlapping each wrap, slightly more than 1/2 hook's shank length. Secure the leather strip with tying thread Cement the tie off thread wraps.

  6. Legs/Thorax - Taper the forward end of the abdomen with tying thread wraps (or ??) for proper positioning of the first set of biot legs. Twist a small clip of rabbit fur into a dubbing loop and wrap a 1 to 1 1/2 turn sparse collar. Tie in a biot on each side of the body over the collar. Cement the thread wraps. Twist and wrap another sparse rabbit collar, tie in two more biots. Cement the tie off thread wraps.

  7. Thorax/Wing Pads - Cut two 1/2" (13mm) lengths from a 1/4" (6.5mm) wide strip of suede. Trim one end to a point and "V" notch the other end. Tie in the first wing pad by the pointed end extending the notched end over abdomen approximately 1/4" (6.5mm) and cement the tie off thread wraps. Twist and wrap another sparse rabbit fur collar. Tie in another set of biots. Cement the tie off thread wraps. Note how much space is needed to include the the last wing pad plus antennae in the head space and twist and wrap another very sparse rabbit fur collar. Position the second wing pad to overlap the first wingpad by half, secure with tying thread and trim any excess suede strip close. Cement the tie off thread wraps.

  8. Form the tying thread head and just before finisning tie in antennae set of biots, tips over the hook's eye, divided to create the antennae. Whip finish and coat the head with 3 coats of head cement.

    KERRY'S COMMENTS

I tie this fly from a #8 to a size big enough I sort of expect the fish to come leaping out of the water in terror at the sight of it. I'm pretty sure the biots can be substituted with something else. I try to keep my materials as simple as I can for availability and just plain ease of tying. The Suede Stone is time consuming enough without having to look for hard to get materials.
