THE SUBSTITUTE

MATERIALS LIST

  1. Hook - Any standard length to 3XL nymph/wet fly hook. Size 6 to 16.

  2. Thread - Black 6/0 or smaller.

  3. Bead - Silver 5/32 inch (4 mm). This bead is one size larger than standard for hook size.

  4. Tail - Ringneck Pheasant tail feather fibers.

  5. Rib - Fine oval silver tinsel.

  6. Body - Peacock herl.

  7. Wing - Small white rubber legs.

TYING INSTRUCTION

  1. Slip a 5/32" (4 mm) bead onto the hook to the hook's eye. Insert the hook into the vise, secure the tying thread to the hook's shank and build an evenly wrapped thread base from the rear of the bead to the hook's bend. Return the tying thread to the rear of the bead. Immediately at the rear of the bead tie in 2 strands of small white rubber legs with the tips over the hook's eye. Wind the tying thread to the hook's bend.

  2. Tail - Tie in 3 to 5 ringneck pheasant tail fibers at hook's bend. The tips should extend rearward about 1/3 hook's shank length. Trim the butts close.

  3. Body - Tie in the oval silver tinsel ribbing and 2 to 6 (depending on hook size) pecock herls at the tail tie in point. Wrap the peacock forward for 3/4 of the space between the tail tie in and the rear of the bead. Secure the peacock herl with tying thread but do not trim. **Note**.

  4. Ribs - Wrap a 3 or 4 turn rib of fine oval silver tinsel to the front of the body, secure with tying thread and trim the excess.

  5. Thorax/Wing - Wrap the peacock herl remaining from the body formation to the front of the body, to the rear of the bead and then a return wrapping to the front of the body. Begin wrapping the peacock herl toward the bead and after 2 wraps relocate the white rubber leg tips to the rear of the fly. Continue wrapping the peacock herl over the rubber legs to the rear of the bead. The rubber leg wing will be over the back of the fly. Secure the peacock herl with tying thread, trim the excess and whip finish. Trim the rubber leg wing to approximately 1/2 hook's shank length. **Note**

    ADDITIONAL NOTES

**Note**...A very good tecnique for wrapping peacock herl bodies/thoraxs is to use 2 to 6 herl and twist them , Counterclockwise, around the tying thread. Grasp the tips of the herls with the tying thread and then wrap the body/thorax. The results are a much fatter and more durable body/thorax without the need for filler material under the peacock or a lot of ribbing material.

The Substitute is easily as productive as it's Grand Father the Prince Nymph! The tip over the eye winging technique makes the "Substitute" a much more easy and durable tie than the Prince Nymph I learned. I use a one size larger than normal bead for weight and never add lead wire. The "Sub" also produces equally as well without the bead. A no bead "Sub" needs to be weghted.
