TYING INSTRUCTION
- Abdomen - Cut a length of Rainey's Floatin' Foam* equal in length to the hook's shank. Slit the "RFF" 3/4 of the length and 1/2 of the diameter. A razor blade or Xacto knife works well. Slip the hook into the bottom of the end of the slit and out through the bottom of the "RFF" so the "RFF" extends approximately 1/4 of the hook's shank length beyond the hook's bend.
Insert the hook into the vise, secure the tying thread to the hook's shank and wrap a couple layers of thread in the area that the "RFF" will contact the hook. Place 2 drops of super glue gel on thread base. Pinch the orange "RFF" around the hook's shank, pull the slit together and and hold for a few seconds to let the super glue set. The slit should be sealed. Cut a piece of black lace slightly longer than the abdomen. Insert the hook's point through the center of the width of the lace. Pull the lace tight against the bottom of the abdomen and wrap so the entire length and diameter of the abdomen is covered. Trim the lace to length at the rear of the abdomen and secure with a couple drops of super glue at the top of the fly. Secure the lace at the front of the abdomen with tying thread.
- Wing Case - Cut a piece of black 1/8" (3mm) thick closed cell foam sheet 1/4" (6mm) wide and 1/4" (6mm) longer than the abdomen and trim into a wing case shape. Apply a thin layer of super glue to the edges of the wing case and secure to the top of abdomen extended slightly past the abdomen's butt and front. Secure the wing case at the front of the abdomen with tying thread and trim the excess.
- Wing - cover the exposed portion of the hook's shank with a couple of layers of tying thread. Stack and tie in a very sparse (20 to 25 hairs) 1 1/4" (32mm) long spinner style light elk hair wing about 1/4 hook's shank length behind the hook's eye. A sparse wing allows the fly to cast much more easily.
- Thorax - Cut a strip of black 1/8" (3mm) thick closed cell foam sheet 1/8" (3mm) wide and 6" (15cm) long. Secure the foam strip to the hook's shank with tying thread at the front of the abdomen with tying thread. Cover the thorax area of the hook's shank with 3 continous passes of the foam strip. One pass to the head of the fly, one pass to the abdomen and one pass to the head. Secure the foam strip with tying thread and trim the excess foam.
- Build a tapered tying thread head, whip finish and cement if you like.
