MATERIALS LIST

  1. Hook - Daiichi 1150, Mustad 80200BR, Orvis 8891, Tiemco 2457. Size 12 to 16.

  2. Thread - 8/0 Uni-Thread to match the natural insect nymph.

  3. Wing/Hackle Post - Sparkle Yarn

  4. Tail - Sparkle yarn or zelon yarn fibers to match the natural insect nymph.

  5. Under Body - Tying thread.

  6. Over Body - Multi sparkle "Skinny S'getti Strings".

  7. Thorax - Dubbing to match the natural insect dun.

  8. Hackle - Rooster neck to match the natural insect dun.

  9. Head - Tying thread.

TYING INSTRUCTION

  1. Insert a hook in the vise, secure the tying thread and wrap a 3 layer thread base just into the hook's bend. The tying thread wraps will be the underbody.

  2. Wing/Hackle Post - Tie in at normal wing position (the 2/3 abdomen by 1/3 thorax proportion works), with tight thread wraps a 1 inch long Anton yarn strand, of appropriate thickness for hook size, parallel to and on top of the hook shank. One end of the yarn to the hooks eye the other end to the hooks bend divided equally. Pull both ends of the yarn strand to vertical position above the hook and at the base of the yarn post material immediately against the top of the hook shank make 5 or 6 tight thread wraps around the yarn then one wrap around the hook shank. Proceed wrapping the post ie: 5-6 thread wraps around the post, 1-2 thread wraps around the shank until sufficient stiffness and height to accommodate the hackle wrap is achieved. About 50 to 60 thread wraps are needed to achieve a solid post. The thread wraps around the hook shank after each post wrapping keep the thread from slipping off the post too far "back" into the process. The final 8 to 10 wraps are in the Counter Clock-Wise direction.

  3. Tail - Tie in five or six sparkle yarn fibers about 1/2 body length at the rear of the thread base. Trim any excess fibers.

  4. Over Body - "Skinny S'getti String" has too large a diameter for flies in this size range. Reduce the size of "S'getti Strings" by stretching the material and applying heat from a hand held hair dryer. A reduction of 1/2 of original size is attainable with reasonable care. An 18" (46 cm) length will yeild 2.5 to 3 feet (76cm to 91cm)
Trim the end of the "S'getti" diagonally to a point and attach with tying thread at the tail tie in point. Wrap the "S'getti forward with touching turns nearly to the rear of the wing post, secure with tying thread and trim the excess close.

  5. Thorax (Rear) - Form a dubbing noodle on the tying thread sufficient to cover the thread wraps behind, under and immediately in front of the wing post.

  6. Hackle - Secure the hackle with tying thread at the front of the dubbed thorax, tip to the rear, concave side down. Wrap the hackle in one turn to the top of the thread wrapped portion of the post and then wrap each succeeding hackle turn below the last. At the finish of the hackle wrap grip the wing post and hackle then secure the hackle tip with tying thread. Trim the excess hackle close.

  7. Thorax (Front) - Form a thin dubbing noodle on the tying thread and cover the hackle tie off thread wraps.

  8. Head - Build a tapered tying thread head, whip finish and cement if you like.

HISTORY AND ADDITIONAL NOTES

The S'gettiMerger was conceived during the winter of '97 '98. The first trial was by my friend Scott Long and the report was excellent. Scott was very excited about the fly. The color listing in this instruction is deliberately missing. Vary the thread color to match the natural insect color. Beige, olive, tan, brown, grey and yellow will be the most used colors.
