TYING INSTRUCTION
- Secure a hook in the vise and attach the tying thread near the hook's bend. Securely attach the 30# mono for the weed-guard well into the hook's bend with tying thread.
- Weight - Attach the lead wire immediately in front of the weed-guard. Wrap the lead wire to the mid point of the hook's shank. Secure the lead wire with many tying thread wraps.
- Tail - Attach the sparkle hair at the hook's bend behind the lead wire with tying thread. Tie in 4 grizzly tips on top of the hook's shank at the sparkle hair tie in with tying thread. Trim all excess material.
- Body - Tie in the flat gold tinsel, wrap forward over the lead wire and secure at the front of the lead wire with tying thread. Trim the excess tinsel.
- Wing - Tie in a small tuft of black or red marabou immediately in front of the tinsel body. Tie in a few strands of red Krystal Flash on the
bottom of the hook shank.
- Collar - Clean the under fur from and stack a pencil sized clump of elk or natural deer hair. Secure the elk or deer hair on top and in front of the marabou with several tying thread wraps with the tips to the rear. Advance thread to the front of elk or deer hair, grasp the butt ends of elk or deer hair with your left hand, pull the butts toward the rear of the hook, make several thread wraps tight against and into the base of the collar and force the collar butts over the collar tips and lock into place. Trim the collar butts to about 1/4" (6/7 mm)
- Head - Spin a head of brown deer hair beginning immediately in front of collar.
Do not pack the hair to tightly so the fly will suspend rather than float. Whip finish the tying thread in front of the spun deer hair and cut the thread. Trim the deer hair head to shape.
- Weed Guard - Re-attach the tying thread at the front of the head and pull the 30# monofilament to the front of the fly and and through the hook's eye from the underside. Secure the mono on the underside of the hook's shank behind the hook's eye with tying thread. Double the monofilament to the rear of the fly and secure on the top of the hook's shank with tying thread. Trim the exess mono, whip finish and double cement.
- Eyes - Stick on the Orvis EZ-Eyes.
*RON'S NOTES*
Ron's Redgetters are a bait fish imitation incorporating some characteristics of a Muddler Minnow and a Dahlburg Diver. Like a Muddler Minnow the hackles used for the tail are tied on top of the hook shank and the head is more rounded or conical. While the fly does contain a collar similar to a Dahlburg Diver it does not have the wedge shaped diving head. Ron's Redgetter is tied with a bit of lead weight so that it suspends a few inches below the surface. It works great on redfish in the shallow marsh and I've also caught a few largemouth on it. The deer hair head and collar give the fly good action and vibration in the water and maintains a profile that is easy to cast.
