MATERIALS LIST
- Hook - Daiichi 1130, Mustad 80250BR, Orvis 1639, Partridge K4A, Tiemco 2487. Size 8 to 18.
- Thread - 8/0 Uni-Thread.
- Egg Sac - Dubbing that matches the natural insect. Olive for BWO's, brown for Brown Drakes, black for Green Drakes and Flav's, yellow for PMD's.
- Tail - Hackle fibers.
- Abdomen/Thorax - Dubbing that matches the natural spinner.
- Hackle/Wing - Two India rooster neck feathers.
- Head - Tying thread.
TYING INSTRUCTION
- Insert a hook in the tying vise, attach the tying thread and build an even thread base the length of the hook's shank.
- Egg Sac - Fashion a dubbing noodle on the tying thread sufficient to form a medium sized dubbing ball at the hook's bend.
- Tail - Attach about 12 hackle fibers directly at the front of the egg sac dubbing ball. Wrap the tying thread toward the rear of the hook and splay the tail hackle fibers over and around the Egg sac dubbing ball. Form another dubbing noodle on the tying thread sufficient for 2 wraps behind the tail to cock the tail to approximately 60 deg. in reletionship to the hook's shank. Split the tail hackle fibers into equal parts with one figure 8 wrap.
- Abdomen - Dub a thin tapered abdomen from front to rear beginning at ¾ hook's shank length. Rib the abdomen with tying thread to return to the hook's forward end.
- Hackle/Wing - Prepare and attach 2 India rooster neck feathers by the butts with tying thread and wrap a 3 turn hackle collar with each feather one feather at a time. Tie off the hackle tips at the top of the hook's shank with tying thread. Pull the hackle fibers from under the fly to the top and secure with tying thread.
- Head - Build a tapered tying thread head, whip finish and cement if you like.
NOTES
Vladimir assures me that this stage of the mayfly life cycle offers a viable fishing opportunity. Some mayflies are trapped in the surface film during ovipositing and are available to trout. I do know that western green drakes are available during this stage.
