NATHAN HUDSON

Green Caterpillar tied by Nathan Hudson, and Andrew his big brother and Dad

The Green Caterpillar tying effort became a real family affair. Nathan started tying 'em then Andrew decided to join in. Ol' Dad even got to contribute a couple. Much fun for all. We used inexpensive bait hooks as well as more expensive tying hooks to tie these Green Caterpillars. The bait hooks are lighter in weight, which gives a slower sink rate; the heavy nymph hooks give a faster sink

THE GREEN CATTERPILLAR

Materials List

  1. Black thread
  2. Red yarn or marabou tail
  3. Almost any hackle feather (Good use for those not suitable for other flies.)
  4. Green chenille body

Tying Instruction

  • Tie it much as you would a wooly, then....
  • Give the hackle a "haircut", cutting the hackle short for a bristly look. That's it the Green Caterpillar!
  • To fish it cast it out among the bream beds in the spring or toward shoreline cover in the summer or fall. You can add a split shot about 6 in. above the fly if you desire, though you'll have to slow down your casting stroke a bit if you do. Twitch it very gently. Hold on! By the way, rumor has it that some pretty sophisticated trout have fallen for the Green Caterpillar too, particularly when it's tied on a heavy wire hook and fished with a strike indicator.
