MATERIALS LIST

  1. Hook -Daiichi 1100, 1180, 1190. Mustad 94859, 94840.Tiemco 5210. Size 10 to 22.

  2. Thread - 8/0 Uni Thread to match body and abdomen.

  3. Tail - Antron Fibers.

  4. Abdomen - Dubbing of a color to match mayfly species being simulated.

  5. Thorax - Dubbing the same color as the abdomen.

  6. Wing - Grey or white closed cell foam strip 1/8" (3.175 mm) to 5/64" (1.984375 mm) wide depending on size of fly being tied.

  7. Legs- Dry fly hackle to match color of natural.

TYING INSTRUCTION

  1. Insert a hook in the vise and build good thread base.

  2. Tail - Tie in a few (4 to 10) antron fibers at the hook's bend the color of the natural one half hook's shank length.

  3. Abdomen - Dubb a thin tapered abdomen the color of the natural about 2/3 hook shank length.

  4. Wing Case - Tie in a 1/8" (3.175 mm) wide strip of closed cell foam at the front of the abdomen and trim the foam butt close. I use light grey or white for all species to improve visibility.

  5. Thorax - Tie in the leg hackle and with the same dubbing as used for the abdomen wrap a fat buggy thorax to the back of normal head space position.

  6. Legs - Dry fly hackle sized for the hook and the color of the natural insect's legs. Palmer the hackle through the thorax in 4 to 6 turns and secure with tying thread at back of normal head space position. Trim the excess hackle close. Trim the leg hackle top and bottom and leave hackle fibers protruding from both sides of the thorax.

  7. Wing Case - Loop the 1/8" (3.175 mm) to 5/64" (1.984375 mm) closed cell foam over the thorax and secure with tying thread at the back of normal head space. Trim the butt end very close. The wing case loop should equal about 1/3 hook shank length in height. Form the head, whip finish and if you like cement.

    NOTES

The FF Nymph is a very good replacement for the "Dubbing Ball" floating nymphs and is very much easier to tie. An alternative tail is stiff hackle fibers splayed to facilitate support and floatation for the rear of the fly. The FF Nymph adapts to all may fly species in appropriate colors and sizes. I use the FF numph in size 10 to 22.
