"28 Aug 1862 - 5 June 1863 (Schenck, p. 252) Baldwin's
aged 25 Aug. 4, 1862
Militia Census with an Inf. Co. at Erie
son of John and Rebecca, b. 1835 in Pa. ae 15 1850 census."2James P. Mandaville, History of Gifford F. Mandeville, 23 Oct 1985, James P. Mandaville, Aramco Box 1912, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.
I have never seen Gifford's middle initial spelled out in records. I have it Francis, per notes from my grandfather/grandmother. Other family members have it Frank. Gifford m. Catherine Elizabeth Stuart in Spring Creek, Warren Co., Pa. 28 Dec 1858 (affidavits to pension application). Catherine d. 28 Feb 1908. Children: James Leroy b. 25 Oct 1859 (my great-grandfather); Catherine (Kitty) b. c. 1866, m. Burt Turner; Edith b. 1876, d. young. Military service (National Archive records seen by me in Washington, Sep 1985); Enlisted 9 Aug 1862 for 9 monts in Capt. Charles E. Baldwin's Independent Co., Pa. Volunteers (Prov. Guard). Musterred out at Harrisburg, Pa. 5 Jun 1863. enlisted again 30 Mar 1864, age 29, in Co. A, 14th Pa. Cavalry. Discharged 2 Nov 1865, rank private, at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan. Gifford applied for (and apparently received) a veteran's pension; his widow applied for a widow's pension. He wrote pension authorities to point out that the correct spelling of his name was "Mandavill" (without terminal "e", the form also preferred by his son, James Leroy). The 1878 Warren County Atlas (anon. Atlas, Warren County. Washington, Pa.: Howden & Odbert, 1878) shows Gifford's farm 2.4 miles (straight line) WSW of Garland. I had no trouble finding the site on a modern topographic sheet in Oct 1985, visited it and photgraphed it. The house is not there now and the land is incorporated in another farm. Present neighbors had move in since 1920's and had no information. This is just across the township line in Spring Creek Twp. Gifford's father's (John S.) farm, also labeled in the Atlas, was on the same road about half a mile closer to Garland just on the Pittsfield side of the Township line. His hilltop site in Oct. 1985 was a open field (with a beautiful view, photgraphed by me) but no sign of a house. Warren County courthouse deed records (indices reviewed and copied by me Oct 1985 provide a fairly complete picture of how the Mandaville lands, originally at least several hundred acres, were split up and sold off over the years (in many cases by A. R. Mandaville). Se also notes on Catherine (Mandaville ) Smith. The 1900 census shows Gifford and his wife living in Rouseville, Vanango Co., Pa. (where his son Jame Leroy had established). The were a separate househould and presumably in a house separate from James L."s at the corner of Diamond St. and 2nd Ave. In Sep 1985 I failed to check pre-1901 Rouseville assessments at Franklin (which might have given a location and suggested an arrival date) although I revieewed 1901 and later records to trace other family members. Gifford and Catherine apparently moved there some time after 1886 or 1887 (when they were still Warren County residents according to Schenk.)."
"Gifford was born c. 1835 in Warren Co., Pa., most probably on a farm near Gaarland. He died 18 October 1900 in Rouseville, Venango Co., Pa. "age 65". Burial was at Garland Methodist Cemetery, Garland, Warren Co., PA. The transcription of his gravestone as "P. F. Mandaville" is incorrect. I copied and photgraphed it 2 Oct 1985. It is a veteran's headstone without dates; the "G" is eroded below and and might be mistaken for a "C" but certainly not for a "P". I have no doubt it belongs to our man. His son James Leroy lies nearby but not immediately adjacent. I have basic conflicts with Gifford's birthdate. My photo of the family record (a list probably made by his son James Leroy between 1914 and 1928) gives 13 Sep 1837. This conflicts with all "official" renderings I have seen, which indicate 1835 (or 1836). 1840 census; age under 5; 1850 census: age 15. Later censuses indicate 1835 or 1836. 1900 census: "b. Sep 1835. Death registry, Venango Co.: age 65 at death in 1900. The month Sep is probably correct, but our family record might have confed him with brother Gilbert, sometimes shown born in 1837. I tend now to think it might have been Dec 1835, but the 1837 date could still be right.3J. S. "Mandaville, G. F., Garland p.o. Spring Creek, was born in 1835. His wife was Catherine E. Stuart, of Warren County, who was born in 1841. They had a family of three children born to them -- James L., Kitty, and Eda. His father, John S. Mandaville, was born in New York in 1810, and settled in Warren county in 1830. His wife was Rebecca Keenan, of Westmoreland county, where she was born in 1800. John S. died in 1877, and his wife died in 1876. They had a family of Gifford, Gilbert D., Catherine, and Caroline. G. F. Mandaville is engaged in lubering and farming, and now owns a farm of 112 acres. He enlisted in the Fourteeth Pa. cavalry, and served in the late war."
