Notes for Jackson A. COOK
1888 History of Harrison and Mercer Counties, Missouri Page 686:
Jackson Cook was born in Claiborne County, Tenn., December 27, 1840, and his parents, Wiley and Lucinda (Harper) Cook, were both born in the same State. The father immigrated to Missouri in 1843, locating first near Independence, but removing to Mercer County in 1847, where he has since resided upon a farm in Princeton Township. He is one of the oldest pioneer settlers of the county now living, and is highly respected in the community where he is known. Five of his children are living; Insley, of Washington Territory, Jackson, Sarah (wife of Wesley Clark, of Mercer County), John T. and Alcy (wife of Calvin Curtis). Jackson was reared upon a farm in Mercer County, and during his youth secured a common school education. He engaged in farming until the close of the Rebellion, when he removed to Princeton, where he has since successfully engaged in the furniture business. He carries at his store on the west side a large and good stock of furniture, carpets, window shades, etc., and has the only undertaking establishment in Princeton. He is also engaged in the sale of pianos and organs, in partnership with T. E. Evans, and is regareded as one of Princeton's well-to-do and enterprising business men. In 1861 Mr. Cook married Elizabeth Hutchison, a native of Lincoln County, Ky., by whom he has had five children; Amanda J., John H., William, Frank and Claude. Mr. Cook is a Republican, and during the late war served six months in the State Militia. He is a Royal Arch Mason, and a member of the I.O.O.F.
Obituary:
Jackson Cook was born December 27, 1840 in Granger County, Tennesse and died June 16, 1923 at Sand Point, Idaho. He was on his way to visit Insley Cook, his brother, became ill on the train, and was taken off at Sand Point and taken to the hospital where he died.
Taken from the Princeton Telegraph - June 27, 1923
The following article was taken from an interview by Mr. Cook which was published in the Kansas City Star about six months ago:
Jackson Cook was the first undertaker in Nort Missouri more than fifty years ago. He bought the first hearse, embalmed the first body, umported the first caskets and has witnessed as great change in the last fifty years in the conduct of funerals as old King Tut has in his three thousand.
The early pioneers were fatalists, says Mr. Cook, and regarded things of death and burial as something that could not be delayed nor improved upon. The people knew that disease was contagious but didn't know how it was spread. They had observed that those who attended funerals readily died of similar diseases so attending funerals was neither the fad nor the style it was when Old King Tut was buried or when he was lately resurrected. Hundreds of people died with little or no medical attention and most of these were buried in the woods in a coffin made of native walnut lumber. The coffin was generally made by a member of the family or a neighbor who was something of a carpenter.
The firm of Cook & Norcross, Undertakers, was launched in Princeton in 1870. Mr. Norcross was a carpenter and was to keep a stock of coffins on hand while Mr. Cook was to be the Embalmer and Funeral Director. He imported a hearse from Bloomington, Iowa, which cost $300 and bought a (line left out in article) using the hearse was $5.00 and to embalm a body cost five more. The fluid was not injected as is now done but was rubbed over the body with a cloth. However it was many years before either embalming or a hearse was much in demand. People were content to load the coffin on some hay in the back end of a lynch-pin wagon, then too, they were not so particular where burial was made, so few long trips were made. As a general thing, in the early days, says Mr. Cook, it was rare that as many as a dozen attended a funeral while he has attended where only himself, the sexton and the family were present. It was rare that the total cost was so much as $40. The funeral cortage, particularly in Princeton, was seldom more than two vehicles, the one hauling the body and the other the family, who also served in most instances as pall bearers. From this time he first came to Princeton until they died, there were two men who always sent a team each to every funeral and that was Eli Mullinax, a merchant and farmer, and Rush Bowsher, a liveryman. No charge was made for their teams nor their personal assistance.
The funerals conducted by Cook and the coffins made by his partner, Norcross, were soon in demand over a radius of twenty miles. The coffins were shaped to the body, being wide at the shoulders and narrow at either end. They were covered with black plush and ornamented with handles and lid-screws bout in St. Louis. The best of these sold for $25. Some bought shrouds for the dead. These were made of silk and resembled either a woman's dress or a man's suit. Half of the total expense was profit so they figured they had a princely income which was about $200 a month for the firm.
The first caskets were bought in St. Louis about 1875 and these retailed at from $10 to $20 but they were not considered so good nor so stylish as the home-made coffins. At this same time they bought a "metalic" casket. It was made entirely of cast iron and weighed more than four hundred pounds. These "caskets" had glass lids and attracted much attention on that account. The metalic one was considere a saleless thing but they sold it to a rich family for the then princely sum of $100 and hauled it twenty miles to deliver it at which time they embalmed the body and conducted the funeral without extra charge.
In the early pioneer rural days music was looked upon as being out of place even in the churches. It was therefore not the style to sing at funerals, nor to have flowers. In fact prayer was seldom given. Although it was the custom for the traveling ministers to "preach" a funeral, this was done after the burial and often it was several months after at which time mabe several funerals would be preached at one time. Mr. Cook favors the old time home-made coffin, made in the old fashioned way, from god sound walnut. He does not favor "embalming" as it was first called, but he thinks the present day funerals are more civilized and more to his liking.

One thing there was quite a few wagons in the train there was John Jonson and family and I think a mr Hale and a lot more and our guide was george w miller and my father Thomas harper and family and our train Joined a large train of covered wagones so to have protection from the Indians then one morning some of our folks took sick and they thought that was going to die they stopt and the large train went on and left our train and a long about noon or after along came a band of Indians and surrounded us and our guid had crossed the plains once before and he having learned something of the Indians habbts he knew more how to deal with them so he bought them of gave them nearly all the previsions we had in our little covered train to go A way and leave us A lone so they went all but one and mr Miller our guide said the train yoke up the oxen and the loos cattle and horses and start to travel he was going to Travel till we caught up with the big train and about midnite we caught up with the big train and that Indian fowlered us till we got in site of the big train then he disapeared he was folowing us to see where we wse going to camp then they were going to all come back and murder us all and then they would take evry thing we had the men tried to find him after we told them all A bout him fowlering us but he comleetly disapeared When the Indiands had us surrounded the old Indian Cheif wanted to shake hands with some of the Children and my half brother Jim Terner was not A fraid of enny thing so he went right up to the old Chief and shook hands with him when the Chief got hold of his hand he started to pull him up on his hors and our guide ran and grabed him on the horse he would have ran off with him and that would have started the fight but we felt safe when we got to the big train
Well we came on to origon this was all Oregon Teritory then and we wintered in portland and in the spring or 1853 we started on our Journey to puget sound. came down the columbia river on A flat boat scow as far as we could and the men drove the cattle A long the bank of the rive then we traveled the bank of the river till we came to Bushes Prairie and there my father took his Donation Clame My father was Thomas Harper
No I am going to dscribe Bush priarie when we seteled on the east side of the Prairie lived Mr george Bush A colored gentleman then came Mr Abe Jones then Mr Sullnap next Mr Rider next Mr kindred on the west Mr. Kune(?) then Jessy Frigeson then Mr Haive Butleg then Ben gorden then Mr Cornell then on the west was Mr Harper then my unckle John Jonson then Mr Candell then one of the Dellnap boys took his clame then Mr littleJohn them Mr Jackson(?) and then mother boy of the dullnaps took his clame in the midle of the Prairie so that compleetes all the setlers at that time now the goverment gave every one that came to this countyr 660 acers and then A patent to the land for Coming out her
My father took his place on the West side of Bush Prairie and built his house Just close to the timber and the nabers all heped to put up A log schoolhouse closte to our house and all the large Boys and girls went to school A bout three month in A year and my folks sent me to school to get me out of he way I gues and the teacher Mr Tomson had so menny schollers that he never had time to hear me resite verry often and he always had the schollers to stand in line and spel and when one mist A word then the next one that spelt it went to the head and then he got the head mark and I Just leasented to him spell and I got so that I could spell Just as well as enny of them if the teacher would give the word out to me and I dident know A letter of my A B C and I liked to never learned my letters or to read in the book
well father couldent raise mutch grain or feed for the stock the first too years not much farming youtencials or fencing so my brother would drive the stock to the timber and hasel brush and tender brush for them to eat and wintered them that way in 1855 and 1856 the Indians got on the war path and all of the peaple had to get to gather and build A fort to live in and blockhouses and folkes moved in the fort as it was called
The fort was made of small fir trees large enough so that the indians couldent shoot through them the fort was built by digging A large ditch all A round the wanted to take in then set the treese in and thn covered the ditch all sollad and at all fore cornerz they built A block house and made holes to shoot and watch out of there was A second floor up stares so that they could se over the top and then they built houses enough so that it would hold all of the nabers and hers was another at Tumwater and grandmound prairie in fact there was evry plase where there was A settlement so to hold evry boddy and all the younger men volenteared and went to hunt the Indians there wasent enny real battle A round hea olympia the
indians would slip A round where there was A family that was unprocted and murder them my half brother P H Harper was in the indian war and took part in the campain of 1855 and 1858 in the Rogeriver country
My Father dident move in the fort right A way and there was a friendly Indianthat often came to our house and we always fed him and was kind to him so after the war broke out he came one day and sit A round and he hadent mutch to say and the next day it was the same and the third day it was the same we couldent think what was the matter with him he acted so queere so before he went A way that day he told Father to take all of his folks and moove in the fort for the Indians was planing to come and massecree us all but Father was not to say A word that he told him or the Indians would kill him Father mooved right in the fort and he never told enny boddy till long after the war was over I never asked father if he ever saw the Indian A gane after pease was settled we all moved back on our places
one time govner steavens had some buisness to tend to out al the coulets in lewis county and he went out our the old military road now the Pacific high way and old Chief bushs laid in the woods at the foot of the Chane hill three days wating for the govner to come back so he could kill him but the guvner came back to Olympia the black river road so saved his life the Chief told it himself
My Father was A Babtist minister once and he established the first Babist in the State of Washington at Tumwater and grand mound prairie and alse alBawfa(?) and vancoover and he maried A great menny couple Nelse Sargent and wife and Glend Webster too numes to mension my father lived on Bush prairie untill I was A twelve years old then he sold out to Mr lettleJohn and we moved to Baker Prairie now Bochester he bout A place on seatter creek and built him A house lived there A bout too years then A Mr Peck wanted the plase so Father sold and we moved A Cross Seatter creek on the Bills place stayed there untill Father bought A place on grand Mound were the town is on now and we lived in A house that belonged to A Mr Goodell all during the war betwene the north and south and ssentiment ran verry high beteene the republicans and the democrats these wasent enny railroads in this country then so peaple had to travel stage and wagons and horse back there was A Mr tully that kept A hotell on mound prairie he was A Republican and the Democrat and my father was A Democrat so quite A lot came and stoped at our house
