National NCX-5 transceiver owned by KA7NOC
Welcome to KA7NOC's "Boat Anchor Page III" !
Steve put this page together for those of you who found his other "BA" pages a little too much to handle ! You'll find some really great shots of Steve's old classic transceivers and receivers. As well as some of his newer gear and projects that he has built from kits . Also to be found here are several small transistor AM radios that Steve has acquired over the last year or so.
So sit back and relax , let the page download completely while you read the bio on "KA7NOC" !

Galaxy V transceiver, five band SSB / CW
One of Steve's favorite rigs. Mainly due to the fact that he put a lot of effort into getting it to look and work the way it does now. Steve still has some work to do on it , but
its definitely a keeper ! |
KA7NOC licensed since 1982. An active amateur
radio operator enjoying many aspects of ham radio. KA7NOC has taken up the sub-hobby of repairing / restoring,
and operating older ham gear. Lovingly called "boat anchors", due to their massive size and weight as compared to today's
compact transceivers. To the right, you'll find a great pic of one of Steve's classic
National transceivers. Steve has been working hard on his amateur radio
web site trying to bring to you the latest happenings and photo's of his many rigs. His home page has changed considerably
in the last couple of days . If you'd like to view it , here's the link to
KA7NOC's Amateur Radio Page . Steve enjoys CW ragchewing on the 40 and 80 meter bands. He also enjoys working SSB and the occasional AM transmission once in a while. His plans for antennas are big, he owns ten acres of land to provide him with massive space for antenna work. |

National NCX-200 transceiver, five band SSB / AM / CW
Another one of Steve's favorite's. This rig was purchased at a ham swap-meet several years ago for the measly sum of $30.00 ! Every once in a while , one runs across a gem . And Steve sure found it in this rig ! |
KA7NOC will be installing his ®Rohn 25G tower this spring / summer , as soon as he figures out where he wants to plant it ! After the beam is back in operation , he'll be installing several wire antennas for low band work. Steve enjoys operating on onehundred sixty meters during the winter months . There's also talk of a moonbounce station in the future , Steve has always wanted to give that mode a try for as long as he can remember. What a fascinating way to communicate with another human , or ? |

Another one of Steve's pride and joy , a National NC-57
in excellent condition ! This receiver , from the 1940's , was found in a local thrift store of all places . Steve spotted it and grabbed it on the spot . He asked me not to disclose what he paid for this radio for fear of bringing tears to your eyes ! |
National NCX-5
Another fine rig in fine condition! The receiver on the NCX-5 is really nice , giving stations a nice soft sound. National incorporated an RIT circuit in the NCX-5 design . Making CW much easier to operate using this rig as compared to the NCX-3 and NCX-200 which have no RIT ! Steve plans on building his own RIT circuit for those rigs which lack it . |
Galaxy external VFO
Steve picked up the Galaxy VFO after he found his Galaxy V. He had to have the VFO to complement his Galaxy station! Nothing had to be done to it, it was in very good condition as you can see . It works like a charm ! |
Galaxy V dial
Close up of the Galaxy V's dial, Steve loves the red / white / and blue dial display ! It puts out a nice soft glow at night and is very easy to read night or day . |
RCA Model 8-X-71
Superheterodyne AM / FM receiver . This receiver dates back to the '50's . Steve was surprised that it had FM when he found it at a local thrift store . This radio set Steve back a whole ten bucks ! See , you can find winners if you look hard and long enough. Yes, it does play well ! |
LLoyd's mini reel to reel tape recorder
Compact for its time , circa. 1960's early '70's , all transistor tape recorder. It's battery operated too ! Steve's sure that this was used on many espionage missions by that famous British spy ..... now what's his name ? ..... |
National NCX-3 dial
Close up shot of the dial on the NCX-3 transceiver. 80 / 40 / 20 meters is all you get with this fine radio. Steve gets nothing but compliments on his audio when he's using the NCX-3 . |
National NCX-3
Tri - band transceiver , 80 / 40 / 20 meters , SSB / CW / AM . This is one of Steve's ®eBay finds . It came with the matching NCX-A speaker / power supply . This rig is in operation on a daily basis at KA7NOC . Steve owns two of these fine radios, both in excellent condition and fully operational on all bands all modes. |
NorCal's 38 Special
30 meter CW only transceiver. This is Steve's QRP rig that he built from a kit put out by the NorCal QRP club. Steve has made 5 contacts using this radio. It's power output is about 300 milliwatts ( about a quarter of a watt ! ) . Pretty amazing to contact other hams across the country using that little power ! |
38 Special
Another shot of the 38 Special QRP rig. Steve built this radio in a ®Radio Shack project enclosure. Steve drilled the holes for the potentiometers and LED's , all that's left is some labeling on the front and back panels to identify the controls. |
