My Ham Page
I am not as active a HAM as I'd
like to be but I do enjoy it when I get on. My favorite mode is CW and
I am always operating QRP when I'm on. QRP is very low power.
My best accomplishment is working Japan on 10 meters with 1/20th of a
watt. Other more serious QRPers have attained remarkable results using
microwatts.
My main rig is the one pictured above....a Kenwood TS430S. I crank down the carrier to attain QRP power levels and measure the power out with a Bird 43 watt meter. You don't have to have a huge amount of power to work the world....just a good antenna. A good efficient antenna system with one watt of power is better than 1000 watts with a lousy antenna. Plus using extra power you don't need causes extra interference on the ham bands AND it is actually illegal to use more power than you need.
Ham radio is a fantastic hobby that I would encourage everyone to investigate. It s a great way to make friends all over the world. I was first licensed in 1966 at the age of 14. My Novice license arrived in the mail in October of 1966 and my first call was WN7GJE. I attained the level of GENERAL class a year later and my call changed to WA7GJE. Then in 1978 I got an EXTRA class license and holders of that class could choose their own 1x2 call so I got K7SU. It is a GREAT call, especially on CW.
I very seldom operate voice on my radio. My regular job is in broadcasting and I'm always talking so it is a nice change of pace to operate another mode and I believe CW (International Morse Code) exercises the brain much better than VOICE. ;=)
I also operate 2 meters locally using my IC
251A all mode, a Yaesu FT-50R handy talkie and a
Yaesu FT-3000M I use in the mobile.
If you are a HAM, send me an email.....maybe we can make a schedule and meet on the air.
Thanks for dropping by.
